Sr. Helen Prejean with Catholics for Abolition in North Carolina – Live Zoom Event in Raleigh

May 21 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

Our guest this evening is Sr. Helen Prejean.” As director of Catholics for Abolition in North Carolina, I can’t wait to say those words! Sr. Helen is not only a huge inspiration to me and members of CANC, she is known around the world for her tireless work against the death penalty. She has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue on capital punishment and in shaping the Catholic Church’s vigorous opposition to all executions.

After accompanying and witnessing the executions of two men at Louisiana State Penitentiary, Patrick Sonnier and Robert Willie, Sister Helen realized that this lethal ritual would remain unchallenged unless its secrecy was stripped away. She sat down and wrote a book, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. (1993) It ignited a national debate that continues today on capital punishment and its brutal nature. You may have seen the Academy Award winning film, Dead Man Walking based on her #1 NY Times Bestselling book.

Please save the date and join us for an enlightening evening. Bring family, friends, and especially anyone who is on-the-fence about the death penalty. There will be time for questions! CANC would love to know that you are planning to join us on the evening of May 21st. If you can, please send an RSVP email to Nancy Jones at director@catholicsforabolitionnc.org.
