God, so much of everyday life in our country
comes down to politics.
Many times,
the women and men that we elect –
to hold office, to create laws and adjudicate them,
to keep our society safe, as well as watch over those in prison –
approach the people they are chosen to work for
as if we are not ALL made by You.
Please soften the hearts of those in positions of power
over our cities and citizens
to understand that we all need each other.
No one is an island,
and no one is above the law
or greater than the people
for whom they were chosen to serve.
Aid Catholics and all your faithful people
to see that capital punishment is
“the most premeditated of all murders.” [1]
Help us to vote carefully with the Seamless Garment in mind –
that we all share one life in Christ –
so that our laws and officials don’t divide
but preserve life – from the very innocent to the most guilty.
We ask You all of this, Eternal One, in the Name of your Son who came to serve
not to be served. Amen.
